ReCap of July and August 2025 Goals

Solid acquisitions
I'll be away for my usual Sunday post so. . .I'm posting early!!!!

While I did begin quilting Grow, I purchased fabric so I didn't make notable progress toward my annual goals this month.

My Annual Goals are:
✒1. Have a net loss of 100 yards of fabric from my stash.
✒2. Finish six UFOs
✔ a. Temperature 2021--pin basted and ditched quilted started in January;  progress made in February. Almost finished the quilting in March. Completed the project in April. Hooray!!!!
b. Temperature 2022-2023
c. Martha's House blocks--purchased backing in May
✒ d. Positively Grows--pin basted in February; started ditch quilting in July
✔e. Maze top--purchased backing in May; longarmer quilted and I added the binding, sleeve and label in June!
f. Butterfly number four

Fabric Summary:
Fabric in this month: 20 3/4 yards
Fabric in year to date: 58 3/4 yards
Fabric used from stash this month: 0 yards
Challenge, Sweet Tooth binding and Sweet Additions
fabric purchases
Fabric used from stash year to date: 83 yards
Net loss/gain this month: 20 3/4 yards
Net loss/gain year to date: -24.25 yards

My July goals were:
✔1. Make the Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks. This month the color is purple!
✔2. Make some 2025 Temperature quilt blocks each Friday of the month when possible.
✔3. Continue with the knee rehabilitation. Last May, I was able to schedule two PT appointments.
✔4. Work on Grassy Creek at least twice.
✔5. Figure out the back and binding for Sweet Tooth.
✔6. Begin quilting Grow. I scheduled several days to start; but, it just didn't happen. I got sidetracked with quilting Stitch by Stitch and by the scraps from the Sweet Tooth mystery.
Binding this project

✔7. Piece the back to Stitch by Stitch. Layer and pin baste it.
✒8. Spend 15 minutes before each sewing session processing scraps--prewashing, cutting, etc..I started well; but, lost momentum. I need to rethink the scrap processing as I am easily distracted seeing SHIBs! Also, while prewashing is necessary, doing it with small pieces takes time and patience.

My August goals are:
1. Share my progress with the Triple Treat Leader Ender project.
2. Make the Rainbow Scrap Challenge blocks.
3. Sew more 2025 Temperature quilt blocks.
4. Make progress on Grassy Creek.
5. Document gifting a quilt to my niece for her wedding.

My flexibility is good now; but, I'm thinking it could be a little better.

I didn't meet all of my December goals. Overall, I made progress on projects. I'm really happy to have completed
the RSC project. It was a good month!

Fabric pull for Shell project
I haven't made an annual goal for myself for a number of years. After seeing how little fabric I actually removed from my stash last year, I decided I need to be more proactive with the removal process. At the end of May, I initiated a shopping ban. I wrote about the ban in a post here. I've done okay with following the ban. While I have purchased a few fabrics that I didn't use within 30 days,
they are destined to be used soon in projects. It wasn't as difficult for me to follow as I thought it would be. Of course, there were many times I was tempted to purchase; but, I didn't!!! I will continue following the shopping ban.

October ReCap and November Goals

Panto pattern for QOV front
My October goals were:

✖1. Cut the fabrics for the 2024 temperature quilt. Piece blocks if possible.
✔2. Embroider the legend of Rita's temperature quilt.
✔3. Embrace PT for my left knee--joint replacement surgery is October 1!
✔4. Begin a mini handwork project using scraps.
✔5. Document the making of the back of the guild challenge quilt.
✔6. Document the latest sourdough recipes.
✖7. Catch up with the August bonus lesson and the September and October embroidery software lessons.
✖8. Document the art classes I did through the 2024 Sketchbook Revival online course.
✔9. Document the art classes I did with my school age granddaughters.
✔10. Document the last few days of play with my youngest granddaughter.
✖11. Select fabrics for the Rainbow Scrap challenge. The color is brown.
While I wasn't able to machine sew in October, I still accomplished the majority of my list. My favorite post of
Panto pattern for QOV back

the month, was the one that my 12 year old granddaughter wrote. She was tickled that her post had so many views. When there was a comment to the post, I'd text her the comment. She texted back an answer each time. Her responses were fun to read.

My November goals are:
1. Trim, bind, label and sleeve the QOV that I started back in August. It's back from the quilter.
2. Trim, bind, label and sleeve Indigo Way that was the Bonnie Hunter mystery last year. The quilter delivered it last Friday.
3. Catch up with the 2024 Temperature quilt.
4. Determine the fabrics for the 2025 Temperature quilt.
5. Determine the pattern for the 2025 Temperature quilt.
6. Continue with my knee PT rehabilitation.
7. Complete the August bonus lesson and the September embroidery software lessons.
8. Gather fabrics for the 2024 Bonnie Hunter mystery. Have enough prepped to begin the mystery on 11/22.
9. Finish the blocks for the 2024 Rainbow Scrap Challenge.
10. Share the results of the Mt. Hood Quilters Guild show.
11. Make progress stitching in the ditch on a RSC project.
12. Document any play time with the two older granddaughters.

I do hope that I'll be back in the studio soon. I'll try again today. I might be able to cut a few pieces of fabric and maybe sew a few together. Regarding my knee: yesterday was the first day that I could sit with my knee in the neutral position. Perhaps, I'll be turning the corner soon and see some rapid progress with this rehab process. It's been a tough 32 days since surgery. The new parts are not the issue. It is all the muscles, tendons and ligaments that support those new parts that are giving me the issues.

May Updates and June Goals

April software class creating an applique from artwork
My May goals were:

✔1. Make Progress on the 2022-2023 temperature quilt.
✔2. Glue selvage squares in the Rainbow Scrap Challenge color of the month.
✒3. Complete the February, March, April and May embroidery software lessons.
✔4. Continue planning a modern mystery quilt along for the next year.
✔5. Piece the January days for the 2024 temperature quilt.
✔6. Continue my PT. I have a six week appointment with the surgeon towards the end of the month.
✔7. Figure out a plan for the latest book club quilt.
✔8. Share the judge's comments from the
Borders for 2022-2023 Temperature quilt

three quilts I entered in the Clark County Quilt show.

In May, I made great progress on my goals. I completed all but the May embroidery software class so in June I ought to be able to catch up with the course materials! I am enjoying the class.

I've done more preliminary planning regarding the new mystery quilt for the guild. Mid-June I've invited the current participants to a wrap up of the Bonnie Hunter/Indigo Way mystery we did as a guild this year. I've prepared a slide show of participants' projects. . .no matter where they are in the process. We will be meeting via Zoom during the guild's Friday Sit and Sew.

Partial layout of Indigo Way
At the end of May, I had an appointment with the surgeon who replaced my knee joint. He gave me a return to work date of June 10. He said I should wait another month before trying to kneel; but, I don't have work restrictions. He was impressed with how well the incision has healed.

He was surprised to learn about the quadricep muscle tear; but, seemed to think that another month of PT would get me to my range of motion goals. I did drive for the first
time this past week. Short trips are okay; but, trips that involve 30 minutes are too long to sit for that muscle tear! I'm walking every day; but the tear still limits the distance to about a quarter of a mile at time.
Auditioning fabric for the spacers
 in 2024 Temperature quilt

My June goals are:
1. Cut and begin stitching the last two borders on the 2022-2023 temperature quilt.
2. Stitch selvage squares in the Rainbow Scrap Challenge color of the month. This month, the color is blue.
3. Complete the May and June embroidery software lessons. The May lesson is advanced applique.
4. Continue planning a mystery quilt along for the next year.
5. Piece the March, April, May and June days for the 2024 temperature quilt.
6. Get back to quilting the Farm quilt.
7. Layout the blocks for Indigo Way and begin piecing them together.
8. Work on the improv piece I began in the Cindy Grisdela class.
9. Continue my PT.
10. Begin to decode Rita's plan for her temperature quilt.
Farm quilt quilting progress
11. Determine if it is possible to add a couple borders to make the transparency quilt a little longer.

It's a big list. I realized if I'm going to make measurable progress on using my stash, I need to actually finish projects. It isn't enough to pull fabrics from the stash and put them in a project because my rule is that I can't count the fabric used until the project is finished!  So this month I'll be concentrating particularly on the Farm quilt.

Linking up with: Oh Scrap; Patchwork and Quilts. I'm going to pour myself a cuppa and be inspired with the work people have completed!

Progress on the blocks made in the

February 6, the American Red Cross released an update to the lifeguarding program. As an instructor trainer, I completed the process to not only update my certification; but, I also renewed it for another two years. I'm still working as the administrative assistant at the hospital part time. Some days, I'm too tired to even think about stitching!

In spite of the training and work, achieving eleven out of 15 goals--while not a total win--was still good progress!

My list of goals for March are:
1. Finish Lime Sprinkle
Backing fabric for Lime Sprinkle

December ReCap and January Goals

Clue six of Indigo Way
My Goals for December were:

✒1. Finish the Farm Quilt. Update:I have managed to complete the ditch quilting and have begun the "fun" part of the quilting.

✖2. Get the Color project to a top. Update:While I didn't physically work on this project, I did think a lot about it. I think I am going to need to piece my background fabric to reach the size that "feels" right to me.

✔3. Stitch another hexagon ornament.

✔4. Keep up with the blocks in the temperature quilt.

✔5. Finish the Lone Star.

✔6. Stitch some clues for the Bonnie Hunter Mystery, Indigo Way. Update: I finished clue six on New Year's Eve.

Spools emptied in 2023
✖7. Help Miss K make progress on ditch quilting her string quilt. Update: I really thought that while Miss K was home during the winter holiday, we would have at least one and maybe two opportunities for her to begin ditch quilting her quilt.

Sadly, her mama came down with COVID a few days before vacation. Miss K helped cook meals and tidy surfaces. While her dad was at work, she provided food and drink for her mama who spent 10 days in isolation. Fortunately, no one in the family caught COVID and we were able to be together for Christmas dinner. Unfortunately, other than hemming two pairs of Miss K's jeans that sh received at Christmas, we didn't carve out time to sew.

December 31, 2023 block
✔8. Determine if I'm going to embark on a 2024 temperature quilt. Update: I'm planning to make another Temperature quilt. Gundra Erla of GE Quilt Designs is doing a version using flying geese. I'm planning to tag along.

✔9. Figure out a block to make for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge (RSC) for 2024.

✔10. Write a post that includes the quilted Christmas decor.

While I didn't meet all my goals, I did make good progress. I enjoyed Christmas and New Year's AND I worked extra hours in December because I'm subbing in for the administrative assistant position until a new person can be hired.

Selvage blocks for 2024 RBSC
I've been working on using up spools of thread. I have a lot of old thread from my grandmother's stash. Some of it isn't strong enough to use in a project, so I use it in the bobbin to secure the edges of a quilt before binding. It is a way to honor my grandma and to leave a little part of her in each of my projects.

Kitchen towel fabrics
Last summer, my mom gifted me a big bag of thread. I've used some of it to quilt and piece projects. The bag came in handy when I helped hem a couple pairs of my granddaughter's jeans on Christmas Day! I wish I would have take photos of that process. My granddaughter was ripping the hem as my daughter pinned a leg and I was pressing, pinning and sewing on any open leg!

Back to the thread, I emptied 15 spools of thread! Last year while I had saved the spools, I didn't capture a photo or document how many I used.

Card attached to the Secret Agent Mystery
fat quarter bundle
My goals for January are:

1. Finish the Farm Quilt.
2. Get the Color project to a top.
3. Complete the January lesson regarding my embroidery software.
4. Audition backgrounds for the RSC. Solid fabric doesn't "feel" right to me. I have a fat quarter pack of a line of fabric. Many of the fabrics read as a solid; but, are in fact a
print with a small motif. Auditioning a few different pieced units may give me the idea of what sort of fabric will make me feel happy!
5. At least, make squares of selvages in the RSC color for the month which is green.
6. Make progress on Indigo Way.
7. Organize the stack of magazines on the studio floor.
8. Be available to help Miss K make progress on her string quilt.
9, Make progress on the half diamond shapes on my 2023 temperature quilt.
Assemble a bunch of these blocks
10.Stitch a few decorative kitchen towels.
11. Begin the Modern mystery with Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr.
12. Make a swimsuit for a new baby coming sometime this month!
13. Begin a quilt for someone who is having heart surgery in a week, Three months after her heart surgery, she will begin treatment for kidney cancer.
14. Start making blocks for the 2024 Temperature Quilt.
15. Make a block for the outgoing President of the Mt. Hood guild.
16. Spend a Sunday making greeting cards.
17. Attend an Irene Rodrick workshop.
Seventeen goals are far too many. Gertie, my inner squirrel, is making herself known again! I'm thankful to feel her presence again. While I see many hours of studio time in my future, I am telling myself whatever I achieve will be great.

Yesterday, I spent time getting physical therapy on my knee as the surgeon said I would have a better outcome from surgery if the supportive tissue around my knee were stronger.

Luckily, the office is about five minutes from my home. The first session went well and while I was sore afterword, this morning I'm able to move without additional which hasn't always been the case when I've had PT in the past. I'll be working extra hours again this month so my studio time will be limited. In the end, I know it will all be good. My plan is to greet each day and make the most of it!

August ReCap and September Goals

Making hot chocolate sleep over part two
My goals for August are:

✔1. Finish Chilhowie. It is bound. The sleeve and label are pinned in place ready for me to hand stitch. I also need to process the scraps.

✔2. Have a sleepover with the granddaughters that live near me. The plan is for them to have their own sleepover so they don't have to share their time with me and my husband! Part one

✔3. Make progress quilting on the Lone Star Quilt.

✔4. Continue documenting our Greece trip on Wednesday posts. Day 4; Day 5; Day 6; Day 7

✔5. In addition to staying current, document the Temperature quilt. While I have regularly inserted a photo in my recap/goal post, I haven't written a post about this project in months.

✔6. Play more with square in a square layouts.

31 Triple Treat leader ender blocks
✔7. Come up with an idea and a layout for the next book club quilt.

✔8. Determine the backing and binding for Positively Grows.

✔9. Keep making Triple Treat leader ender blocks. I've completed 31 blocks so far. To make a large size, I need 240 blocks. I plan to make blocks until I've used the 2 1/2 inch strips that are multicolored or that I have small bits left.

All in all, I had a terrific month. It feels fantastic to have met the goals I set for myself!

My goals for September are:

1. Figure out how to repair the sequins on a knitted Christmas stocking.

2. Piece the back and prepare the binding for Positively Grows.

Repair the sequins on
this knitted Christmas Stocking
3. Stitch a Christmas stocking.

4. Write a post about how to square a quilt back.

5. Continue documenting our Greece trip on Wednesday posts.

6. Continue making blocks for the Temperature quilt.

I'm linking to Cynthia at Oh Scrap/Quilting Is More Fun Than Housework as those Triple Treat leader ender blocks are all made from scraps.

This is a huge list. . .let's see how I do by the end of the month!

✔5. Post about our Greece trip on Wednesdays. Day 1; Day 2; Day 3 Part one;  Day 3 Part two

✔6. Work on catching up with the temperature quilt. (I did insert the blocks I made on vacation. I did finish stitching and inserting the blocks for the left of the border.)

✖7. Determine a layout for the modern challenge. (I have continued to doodle; but, I haven't come up with a design that I've wanted to make. Perhaps, I'll throw in the towel regarding participating in this challenge.)

✔8. Put sleeves on two older quilt projects.

✔9. Write a post about my "stained" glass experience.

I made progress on my Quilty projects this month which was great. I used some scraps which was even better! I would have made even more progress; but, I encountered a work opportunity and I had more issues with my right knee.

Cutting more background pieces
Regarding the job, I've been going into work every day. The staff person who manages incoming calls and visits to the department that I work, is on an extended leave of absence until September. Staff absorbed a number of her duties; but, they needed help with the calls and the visits.
My supervisor asked if I would work a few hours every day. I agreed!
Looking forward to a couple
of sleepovers

I haven't worked Monday through Friday in years! I still don't work a 40 hour week. Between supervising CPR skill checks, teaching a CPR class and relearning how to forward and transfer calls; I was tired at the end of each day!

This week, I'll be spending three hours a day in the office. I've liked the change. I am getting to know staff that I generally wouldn't come in contact with as a CPR instructor. Staff members are a kind, supportive and helpful group. Work is a joy.

Regarding the knee, I spent a couple weeks being up 17-20 hours out of every day. I was "up" because the pain in my knee would wake me up and I would need to walk a bt to stretch the knee before I could resume sleep.

That knee also swelled to the point I had difficulty squeezing into a pair of pants. Putting on shoes and socks was an ordeal because I was unable to bend my knee.

I called the orthopedic clinic to make an appointment for a second cortisone shot. I learned my records had been transferred to another doctor and was "on the list" for a knee replacement. My chart notes my my March visit contained no information about a second cortisone shot when the pain had returned. Because of my pain level, waiting three months for an appointment was not possible.

Last week, I was able to have an appointment with a physician's assistant and receive the cortisone shot. Within four days, I was feeling much better. I wasn't getting up every hour on the hour. I do have a virtual appointment scheduled mid August with another physician's assistant to discuss a partial knee replacement which would be scheduled late fall.

Triple Treat leader ender blocks
Between the extra work hours and the knee pain, I either didn't have time to sew or I was in too much pain to sew. While ibuprofen and ice packs did reduce the pain level, I was unable to resume my regular activities of daily living. I missed the studio time and I missed my Zoom sew days with my quilt buddies! It's been a week since the shot and my pain level is a lot less.

My goals for August are:

1. Finish Chilhowie. It is bound. The sleeve and label are pinned in place ready for me to hand stitch each into place. I also need to process the scraps.

2. Have a sleepover with the granddaughters that live near me. The plan is for them to have their own sleepover so they don't have to share their time with me and my husband!

3. Make progress quilting on the Lone Star Quilt.

Continue documenting our Greece trip
4. Continue documenting our Greece trip on Wednesday posts.

5. In addition to staying current, document
the Temperature quilt. While I have regularly inserted a photo in my recap/goal post, I haven't written a post about this project in months.

6. Play more with square in a square layouts.

7. Come up with an idea and a layout for the next book club quilt.

8. Determine the backing and binding for Positively Grows.

9. Keep making Triple Treat leader ender blocks.

June Recap and July Goals

Adding filler blocks
For June, my goals were:

✒1. Keep up piecing the temperature blocks each day. Begin piecing the filler blocks for the borders. I will need about 165 of these. Before I left on my trip, I had pieced and inserted 24 filler blocks. I'm a little behind on the remaining filler blocks and I have pieced all the remaining blocks for June. When I return, I'll insert a few blocks each day.

I'm also auditioning filler blocks to insert at the top and bottom of the quilt top.

✔2. Sew two swim suits.

✔3. Sew a skirt

✔4. Sew a top.

Strips for Preeti's sew along.
✔5. Layer and pin baste the quilt top that I made last month with the five inch squares that Preeti gave me.

✔6. Participate in Preeti's Positively Sew Along.

✔7. Finish the documentation of our March London trip--I've one last post to write!

✔8. Spend some time with Miss J and baste her quilt.

✔9. Order enough hand dye fabric for the temperature quilt and for a potential project for Mod Squad, one of my small groups that works in the modern style.
