Angela, the creator of the Rainbow Scrap Challenge color, chose aqua as the color for July. I didn't have many strings of aqua so I looked through Martha's scrap bag. I added a few. Then I pulled the chunks I had remaining from past projects.

To have enough fabric, I needed to throw in a few teal and turquoise strings to have enough string material to piece all the rectangles. I believe I managed an aqua vibe to the block!

I had few strings remaining, which is great! It makes me so happy to be using instead of collecting!

Then it was on to piecing the gray and black bits to the blocks. Gosh, my table gets to be such a jumbled mess as I work through the blocks!

I spent a day piecing the aqua part of the block. I spent a day and a half piecing the grey/black part of the block and piecing the sections together. Matching the intersections has improved since I began gluing the center string.
I need four more blocks. Gertie is thinking that for two of the blocks, I piece one additional big block of green and an additional big block of yellow. She is likely right; but, I'll piece purple next and then decide! It is shaping up to be 60 x 96 inches. I've asked Gertie to think about ideas for getting it to 72 inches wide. She said she would appreciate suggestions from you. She is such a cheeky squirrel!

To answer a question I've received about the foundation that I use to sew the strings--it is newsprint. Weekly grocery circulars and the voter's pamphlet from the May primary are my current sources since it is "free." I use a short stitch length--12 to 15 stitches per inches or 1.5- 2.0 setting when I'm stitching the strings to the paper. I do try to back stitch at the beginning and end of the seam. Removing the paper is easy, although it is messy. I tend to remove the paper when I'm ready to sew a big block together. I do take a victory lap around each big block to discourage any seam from "unsewing" itself! Piecing the aqua strings was goal number two on my July
list.

You did find some pretty aquas for your string blocks, Terry! I really like your quilt block design and how the colors are going together. This is going to make a beautiful quilt!
Your newest aqua additions are gorgeous. Great idea on using the weekly circulars for foundation paper. I am going to have to build a stash for that purpose too. This beautiful quilt is moving right along. Have a lovely day, Terry. Hugs.
The string block is a very nice design and different from any other I've seen. You've put some lovely blocks together, Terry. This quilt is going to be stunning! Sadly, I have nothing to offer Gertie :(
Loving those aqua string blocks!! i find sewing on newsprint that I just sew through the paper on the first line then fold it back and just use it to measure the strip...makes taking papers off a lot easier--just one seam....hugs, Julierose
The more I see it the more I like it! The aqua and black ones would make a fantastic quilt in just those colors.
Look at those pretty chunks of aqua! I love the strings. I love the gray/black with it too. You are so thorough in securing your seams it makes me ashamed of myself! Tell Gertie I'm sorry, but I am no good in choosing colors.

The aqua makes some dramatic string blocks, even though you had to hunt for enough in the color. I enjoyed seeing your previous posts and all the projects you’ve done.
This humble little block is turning into a stunning quilt. I love it SO much! Scraps can make such awesome quilt when the quilter knows how to use them and this is one great example. Carry on, Terry. ;^)

Your aqua blocks are so pretty! It's a beautiful scrappy rainbow quilt. Sorry, I can't come up with any suggestions for a border. I think it had taken me weeks to decide!
Just beautiful! How you're making blocks feels very "economical," is right up my "frugal" alley. At one time I made loads of blocks this way, using telephone book pages as foundations (Ã la Bonnie Hunter). Your quilt is gonna look so colorful and great when you're done!
Terry those string blocks look terrific. I need to try rectangle blocks one of these days. And, I like the idea of utilizing one color for the most part.

Congrats on getting your AQUA blocks done for this quilt, Terry! Tell Gertie that I think I would add two purple blocks instead of the green and yellow ones she was thinking of. It's the only color of the rainbow missing from the mix.
